Recently, we’ve been receiving increasing requests for some classic favourites. While interest in Star Wars costumes had slowed for a time, the rise of the new spin-off series has brought many iconic characters back into the spotlight, inspiring more people to recreate them.
One costume currently in progress is Darth Maul. We originally created the full outfit years ago for a client in Ireland. The robe alone required an incredible 27 metres of specially dyed fabric and around 169 sunburst pleats. After endless folding, pressing, and topstitching, Alison was exhausted — and completely covered in black fluff. The finished robe looked spectacular, but its sheer weight made it highly impractical, almost like carrying another person. Since then, we’ve continued producing the Maul costume without the robe, including a version Jude wore at conventions. He even shaved his head, and we created vacuum-formed stencils to speed up the make-up process — true dedication to the character. Keep an eye on our SNIPPETS posts for updates on the latest build.
Another costume we’re frequently asked about is Old Ben Kenobi. Perhaps as fans get older, they’re drawn to characters that feel more age-appropriate and offer greater comfort to wear. Although it appears simple, this costume is incredibly detailed and time-intensive to make, right down to the carefully repaired darning in the silk tunic. We’ve only created this costume once before, but as the original fabrics are still available, we’re pleased to continue offering it on commission.
Return of the Jedi Luke Skywalker also remains a firm favourite. It’s a surprisingly complex costume to recreate — often the simplest-looking designs are the most challenging to perfect. With renewed interest in classic characters, this one may soon be making a comeback as well.
