Free Guy Hot Pink Rabbit
Making the Hot Pink Rabbit was enormous fun, it challenged us and we enjoy a challenge. Alison hasn’t worked on fur mascot costumes for a number of years but this project brought it all back, the techniques used to work with the different lengths of fur and the sheer amount of fur that ends up in the laundry or toilet visits.
After revisiting the film and researching online what we could, we established that the character had a base muscle suit which is overlayed with a full fur suit. The rabbit has a cowl with ears, removable face plate, gloves, tail, feet, Sheriff’s badge and leather gun belt with holsters.
We started with the muscle suit, sculpting the muscles to create the general shape of the bunny and attaching these muscles to a lycra suit. The muscles were sculpted from reticulated foam, covered with a thin skin of wadding to even out the muscles and then covered in lycra. The lycra suit has feet and thumb stirrups, a zip up back and a fly zip for quicker toilet breaks.
The tall rabbit ears are made from plastazote with wadding /fur skins and have been mounted to an aluminium frame that is attached to a snug fitting bonnet. This holds the ears tightly in place and prevents any movement. The bonnet then has padding attached to build up the shape of the rabbit head and a safety pad that lies against the wearers head. Over the bonnet sits a lined fur skin which velcro’s at the back.
The face plate of the rabbit was sculpted by Jude in clay in order to create vacuum form shells. The eye sections were cut away and replaced with stencilled, painted gauze for visibility. We then set about creating exactly the right colour, dying the fleece. After lots of attempts we landed on just the right colour. The face plate was covered with the pink fleece and the cheeks/chin covered with the white. Black piping detail was added to the bottom of the cheeks for more definition and we added a painted pink nose and whiskers. The fur outer was then hand sewn to the face plate and was finished with strong earth magnets which hold the mask in position.
The fur suit is fully lined and has a zip up back which is hidden by a placket. The white fur chest has the muscles attached and sewn in to give better definition. The sleeves extend down to the hands and have thumb slots. This help prevent the sleeves from bunching.
The gloves were purchased and are a mesh sports gloves to help keep the wearer cool. The fur fingers and cast resin claws were then attached to the gloves by hand, as the sleeves of the fur suit covers the mesh hand part of the gloves there was no need to make full fur gloves.
The tail for the rabbit was sculpted from reticulated foam, covered with wadding a fur and is attached to suit.
The feet were also sculpted from reticulated foam, covered with wadding and fur, with elasticated fur cuffs, which were then bonded to Plaztazote and rubber soles encasing a comfortable sports shoe. The cast resin claws were then attached by hand.
Finally we purchased the metal Sherrif’s badge and replica leather Gun Holster to complete the look.
We thoroughly enjoyed making this costume and hope it receives loads attention for the wearer.
