Last year we were delighted to be contacted by Louby Lou – a vibrant Northwest UK children’s entertainer and female clown known for her colourful personality and high energy performances. Louby Lou was preparing for her upcoming children’s parties and live shows and she wanted a brand-new custom clown costume that reflects her cheerful brand while adding an exciting fresh twist.
Working closely with Louby Lou, we created a bespoke costume design that complements her existing merchandise and signature “dotty” clown style. The goal was to keep her recognisable look while introducing brighter colours, added volume, and extra bounce to enhance her stage presence at birthday parties, family events, and community performances across the Northwest UK.
Louby Lou followed in her father’s footsteps when she joined the family entertainment business years ago. Her father, Trumble the Clown, was well known for his larger-than-life character and signature big red tie. To celebrate this special legacy, we’ve incorporated a heartfelt tribute into Louby Lou’s new costume design. On the back of her apron, we’ve created a large red bow wrapped with a long red tie, a subtle but meaningful nod to her dad’s iconic look. The Costume
Louby Lous’ new costume consists of t-shirt and leggings, full skirt dress with puffed sleeves, apron, petticoat, bloomers & hair bow.
The Undergarments
Comfort and practicality were just as important as appearance. For Louby Lou’s leggings and T-shirt, we placed a custom print order through Zazzle to create a bold red-and-white wide stripe pattern. We ordered two pairs of leggings with a clever plan in mind, one pair could potentially be repurposed to create matching sleeves for the T-shirt. These sleeves would then be sewn onto a Powernet body, providing a lightweight, breathable base layer, perfect for long days of performing while staying cool and comfortable.
Full skirt dotty dress
Louby Lou’s new dress was to have a simple, classic silhouette, a full, flowing skirt, puffed sleeves, a zippered back and a neatly finished collar with heart embroidered patches. Made from a polka dot jersey fabric strengthened with a Scuba fabric to shape and bounce.
Dotty bloomers
Louby Lou’s bloomers match the dress perfectly. Using the same fabrics the bloomers have a poly-cotton elasticated waist and frilled bottoms. All the elasticated areas are adjustable.
Pink Pinny
Louby Lou’s new funky apron, as well as being functional also had to have handy pockets (perfect for tricks, treats, and surprises), a playful shape to match her vibrant style, plenty of bounce and movement for performing. Made from a pink shimmering fabric, the apron has three pockets, piped edges and a hidden pocket inside the apron upper to hold her microphone.
A Bow with Meaning
A large red spotted bow was carefully cut, constructed, and padded to give it a bold, eye-catching presence. Instead of traditional hanging ties, we introduced a unique design feature specially for Louby Lou, an oversized necktie, inspired by the one worn by Louby Lou’s father, Trumble the Clown. This was more than just a design choice, it is a tribute. The large tie wraps around the centre of the bow and drapes elegantly down the back of the costume, honouring a special legacy while adding a distinctive finishing touch. The bow attaches to the back waistband of the apron with large poppers, making it super easy to remove for washing. Practical and stylish?
Bringing the Bounce
To give the outfit that extra wow factor, we’ve added a petticoat, inspired by an 80s rah-rah skirt. Made from a beautifully textured bubble fabric with an elastic waist, it will add volume, movement, and just the right amount of retro fun.
The Finishing Touch
No Louby Lou look would be complete without the perfect accessory! To tie everything together, we’ve added a padded hair bow for that signature playful flair.
Having previously worked on mascot costumes and professional entertainment outfits, this project brought back so many joyful memories. There’s something truly special about designing costumes that bring characters to life and create magical experiences. Just observing this couple of clowns having their photographs taken and larking around was amazing. You just can’t help but smile!
